Coxwold, North Yorkshire – Shandy Hall, the former home of extraordinary 18th century writer Laurence Sterne, is hosting a rare northern exhibition of works by the internationally acclaimed artist Glen Baxter.
Born in Leeds in 1944, Glen Baxter studied at Leeds College of Art and now exhibits worldwide. His distinctive drawings—ink and crayon compositions paired with deadpan captions—have earned him a cult following and a place in major collections, including those of the Tate Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum. His work has also appeared in The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Elle, and Vogue.
This free exhibition at Shandy Hall offers visitors a chance to enjoy and purchase original works and publications, including Almost Completely Baxter: New and Selected Blurtings and Glen Baxter returns to Normal.
Influenced early on by Surrealism, and with a keen eye for the absurd, Baxter’s work parodies classics like Dan Dare and Biggles, and pokes fun at everything from fine dining to the pretentions of the art world. Cowboys, scouts, Robin Hood and the Famous Five all make an appearance in improbable scenarios.
Shandy Hall, a Grade I listed building in North Yorkshire, was the 18th-century residence of Laurence Sterne, author of the groundbreaking novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman.
“Shandy Hall is no stranger to eccentricity and surreal humour.” said Curator Patrick Wildgust.
“Glen Baxter’s gentle satire sits comfortably at Laurence Sterne’s old home.”
The exhibition runs until 14th September 2025 during Shandy Hall opening hours.
