Leeds is experiencing an awesome spring season, with triumph and celebration across sports, culture, business and community initiatives. From sporting glory to new openings and milestone events, the city continues to demonstrate its resilience and ambition despite economic challenges nationwide.

Leeds United Return to Premier League Glory

Leeds United fans are still celebrating after the club’s triumphant return to the Premier League. On 5th May, Daniel Farke’s men secured promotion as Championship champions, edging Burnley on goal difference in a nail-biting conclusion to the season. Manor Solomon’s late winner at Plymouth Argyle’s Home Park secured the title in dramatic fashion.

This promotion is especially sweet following last year’s play-off final heartbreak at Wembley. The Whites showed incredible determination throughout the campaign, with their home form particularly impressive – Elland Road proved virtually impenetrable in league matches, with no away teams managing a victory there during the regular season.

Leeds and Burnley both amassed an impressive 100 points each – the first time in Championship history that two clubs have reached this milestone in the same season. After a disappointing draw at Luton Town late in the campaign, Leeds embarked on a remarkable six-match winning streak to clinch the title when it mattered most.

Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon Set to Inspire Thousands

This Sunday (11th May) will see thousands of runners take to the streets for the third Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon in partnership with Clarion. The 26.2-mile route will take participants through some of the city’s most scenic communities and picturesque countryside areas, starting and finishing at AMT Headingley Rugby Stadium.

More than 12,000 entrants are expected across the marathon and half-marathon events, with large crowds anticipated to line the route and cheer on the participants. The marathon celebrates the life and achievements of the late rugby league legend Rob Burrow while raising vital funds for numerous worthy causes.

Comprehensive traffic arrangements have been put in place to ensure the day runs smoothly, with some road closures beginning as early as 4am on race day. Local residents have been directly notified of restrictions, and the wider public is encouraged to plan journeys accordingly.

Exciting New Openings Transform City’s Landscape

The first few months of 2025 have already seen an impressive array of new establishments opening their doors across Leeds. The city’s reputation as the foodie capital of the North continues to grow with several notable restaurant launches.

Giggling Squid opened its first Leeds branch in April, bringing authentic Thai cuisine to Park Row. The 180-capacity venue features the brand’s signature floral interiors and home-style dishes. Meanwhile, Alfonso’s Bodega Deli is set to launch this spring, offering Cuban-inspired sandwiches and smoked meats in the city centre.

Beyond food, Danish homeware brand Søstrene Grene opened its first Leeds store in Trinity Shopping Centre in January, bringing affordable Scandinavian-inspired homewares to the city. The Old Engine Works, a Grade-II listed red-brick building in Hunslet, is being transformed into an exciting new live music venue with an on-site cafe.

Community Achievements and Future Events

Leeds Community Foundation is celebrating 20 years of supporting communities across Leeds and Bradford. Since its founding in 2005, the organisation has generated more than £65 million in grant funding and philanthropy, directly supporting over 2,400 charities, voluntary groups, and grassroots organisations.

The city’s educational excellence is also being recognised, with several Leeds teachers and schools shortlisted in this year’s Tes Schools Awards. Oulton Academy has been nominated for Secondary School of the Year, while principal John Higgins is in contention for Headteacher of the Year. Sue Woodroofe from The Grammar School at Leeds has been nominated for Independent Schools Headteacher of the Year.

Leeds is further cementing its status as a major financial hub with the RSMR Investment Conference taking place on 14th May at the Queens Hotel. The event brings together 12 highly rated fund groups which collectively manage over £3.5 trillion in investments, offering Yorkshire-based financial advisers unique insights and opportunities.

Leeds, Moving Forward

A recent report on the Connecting Leeds transport strategy shows significant progress is being made toward the vision of Leeds as a city where personal car use becomes optional. Major highway improvements, including the Armley Gyratory and the East Leeds Orbital Route, have increased road capacity, while the transformation of City Square and wider public realm has created safer, pedestrian-friendly spaces.

Leeds City Bikes, the largest e-bike scheme in the UK, continues to expand, while the city’s Park & Ride sites at Stourton, Elland Road, and Temple Green now remove around 10,000 cars from city roads each week. With over 90 electric buses now serving the busiest routes, the city is making tangible progress on sustainable transport.

As spring blooms into summer, Leeds continues to demonstrate why it remains one of the UK’s most dynamic and forward-thinking cities – a place where community spirit, sporting excellence, cultural innovation, and business ambition combine to create a truly special northern powerhouse.
