Leeds Charity Zarach Receives £25,000 Boost to Combat Child Bed Poverty

A Leeds charity which aims to end child bed poverty has received a timely funding boost this festive season thanks to leading commercial law firm Bevan Brittan.

Zarach, which works to give children a greater chance of succeeding at school by ensuring they have a bed of their own, has benefited from fundraising activity by Bevan Brittan colleagues since it was selected to be one of its office charities in May.

Now, the firm is making an additional £25,000 donation to the organisation as part of its ongoing commitment to the communities where it is based. Zarach will use the funds to reach its target of delivering 1,000 beds to children prior to Christmas.

This is the latest in a series of annual festive donations which Bevan Brittan has made to a range of charities and not-for-profits, and the second consecutive year that the firm has donated £100,000 in total to four organisations.

Julie Cowan-Clark, Partner and Community Engagement Lead at the firm’s Leeds office, said:

“The support that Zarach is providing to families, and in particular young children, is very special and will provide much-needed comfort over the festive season. We are pleased to be able to support Zarach in the work that they do.

“Last year was the highest amount we have ever donated to our office charities and I am delighted that we are able to match that again. It is important that we make a positive contribution to the communities where we work and do all we can to help these organisations, especially at this time of the year when demand for their services will be higher.

“Fundraising for all charities and not-for-profit organisations in the current climate remains difficult, so we know how important it is that they continue to get as much support as they can.”

In addition to Zarach in Leeds, the other organisations that will each receive £25,000 are:

• 1625 Independent People in Bristol, which supports young people in the city who are homeless, leaving care or at risk of homelessness;
• Age UK Birmingham, an independent charity which offers services to support older people, their families and carers;
• Thames Reach in London, which tackles homelessness in the capital and has staff and volunteers out on the streets every night to help those forced to sleep rough.

Bevan Brittan’s team in Leeds expanded beyond 100 people at the end of 2023 and has seen further growth in 2024, with a number of senior hires. Earlier this year, the firm also announced that nine colleagues in Leeds had been promoted, including four new Senior Associates and five new Associates.
