Right, let me tell you, if you’re after a decent cocktail, Leeds has seriously got its act together. It’s not just about your standard G&T anymore; we’re talking proper, inventive drinks that cater to pretty much every taste you can imagine. The bartenders around here are like wizards, always shaking up something amazing. So, if you’re looking for a fancy night out, a hidden speakeasy vibe, or just a chill spot with seriously good drinks, Leeds is definitely the place. I’ve done my fair share of “research,” so let me take you on a little tour of some of my favourite cocktail spots.
So, What Makes a Cocktail Bar a Winner in My Book?
For me, it’s not just one thing that makes a cocktail bar really stand out. You need bartenders who genuinely know their stuff – the kind who can mix a perfect classic with their eyes closed or even dream up something completely new just for you. Then there are the ingredients. You can really taste the difference when they’re using quality spirits, fresh juices, and all those little homemade syrups and garnishes. A good menu is key too, one that’s got the old favourites alongside some unique creations you won’t find anywhere else.
And let’s be honest, the atmosphere of the place plays a massive part, doesn’t it? Whether it’s super chic, cosy and intimate, or buzzing with energy, it has to feel right. Even the little things, like the right type of glass or how they present the drink, make a big difference to the whole experience. It’s all part of what makes a night out special.
My Top Leeds Cocktail Haunts You Have to Try:
I’ve found some absolute gems around the city. For instance, you have to check out Below Stairs on South Parade. It’s one of those brilliant hidden spots, downstairs and super cosy. The cocktails I’ve had there are always so thoughtfully put together, often with really interesting ingredients and a bit of a story behind them. I heard their menu at the moment is all about exploring basic tastes like salt and sugar – sounds intriguing! It’s no surprise they’re ranked so highly nationally; it always feels like a proper special experience when I go.
Another spot that’s been getting national recognition is Tabula Rasa over on Eastgate. It’s got this really cool, modern art-deco feel – very stylish. I’ve heard it’s pretty laid-back for a coffee during the day but then gets quite sophisticated in the evening. Their cocktail menu sounds amazing too; apparently, they even have one that changes colour!
If you like a bit of mystery with your drink, then The Maven on Call Lane is a Leeds institution. You have to look for the unmarked door with just a gold “M” on it – proper speakeasy style. Once you’re inside, it feels like you’ve stepped back in time. The bartenders are fantastic, and they do some brilliant classic cocktails as well as these innovative seasonal tasting menus. A place for a true cocktail lover.
Speaking of hidden spots, have you ever been to The Domino Club? It’s tucked away in Grand Arcade, behind what looks like a barber shop! You head downstairs, and it opens up into this buzzing speakeasy with live jazz, blues, and soul music. The cocktails are top-notch, and they have a great whisky selection. The whole vibe is just incredibly cool.
For something a bit more experimental and intimate, Blind Tyger on Cross Belgrave Street is a must-visit. It’s got this dark, opulent, Victorian lounge thing going on, really cosy with little booths and interesting bits and bobs dotted around. Their cocktails are definitely on the adventurous side, often featuring homemade infused spirits and creative flavour combinations. I remember having something really unusual there once that was fantastic.
If you want cocktails with a killer view, then Angelica at Trinity Leeds is the place to be. It’s a penthouse bar, so you get these amazing panoramic views over the city, especially from their wraparound terrace. It feels pretty swish, perfect for a special occasion, and the cocktails are as elegant as the setting. It’s always buzzing up there, especially when the weather’s nice.
Back on the bustling Call Lane, Roland’s offers a more laid-back, neighbourhood bar feel, but don’t let that fool you – their drinks are seriously good. They absolutely nail the classic cocktails, have a decent beer selection too, and the best bit? There’s this amazing hidden rooftop terrace out back. It’s a proper little sanctuary up there, especially on a sunny afternoon.
And you really can’t talk about the Leeds cocktail scene without mentioning Jake’s Bar & Still Room, also a Call Lane veteran. They’ve been around for ages and even have their own working copper pot still – “Tabitha,” I think it’s called – where they create their own unique spirits, liqueurs, and bitters with seasonal flavours. The cocktail menu is extensive and always has something inventive. It gets pretty lively, especially on weekends, and the bartenders are always happy to chat and mix something up just for you.
Honestly, exploring the cocktail scene in Leeds is always an adventure; there’s constantly somewhere new popping up or an old favourite with an exciting new menu. It’s like a local cocktail fan, Laura B., said – and I totally agree with her – “Discovering a new cocktail at a place like The Maven or Below Stairs feels like a real treat. The bartenders really know their stuff, and it’s more than just a drink; it’s an experience.” That sums it up perfectly for me. There’s so much passion and creativity poured into every glass here, you’re pretty much guaranteed a brilliant night out. Cheers to that!
