More than 1,000 students celebrated completing their degrees at the first dedicated Leeds graduation ceremony held by Global Banking School last month.
The ceremonies took place on 29 June and recognised students studying business, digital technologies, construction, healthcare management and other sectors facing demand for skilled workers.
GBS said almost 90 per cent of its Leeds graduates came from some of the region’s most disadvantaged communities, while the average graduate was aged 38.
The education provider operates campuses at Wellington Place and Great George Street, with many of its students returning to education later in life or entering higher education through a non-traditional route.
Among those graduating was Lucineia Rodrigues da Silva, who returned to education after a 25-year career in healthcare to complete a degree in Healthcare Management.
She said her studies had strengthened her confidence, leadership and critical-thinking skills and inspired her to develop the Blossom Girls Centre, a planned community initiative supporting young women with confidence and life skills.
Lucineia said: “Education changed the way I see my future. Through GBS, I learned that growth never has an age limit and that when we invest in ourselves, we gain the power to positively influence the lives of others.”
James Kennedy, chief executive of GBS, said the event celebrated students who had balanced their studies with employment, family responsibilities and other commitments.
He said: “Graduation is a significant milestone and a celebration of the hard work, resilience and ambition of our students.
“Here in Leeds, we are proud to support learners from a wide range of backgrounds, many of whom are returning to education later in life or taking a non-traditional route into higher education.”
The ceremonies were attended by Mark Sewards, Labour MP for Leeds South West and Morley.
He said: “Expanding access to higher education and developing skilled local talent is essential to the future prosperity of our region.
“Congratulations to every graduate on reaching this important milestone, and I wish them every success in the careers and businesses they go on to build.”
The graduation highlighted the growing number of adults in Leeds returning to education and seeking qualifications linked to employment opportunities across the region.
